Matt and Sarah Girgis

On this “episode” of 67 Designs Customer Spotlights, where we share the stories of some of our customers, we catch up with Matt and Sarah Girgis to see what’s new since we first featured Matt here in 2020. Trading the fast pace of Los Angeles for more suburban Corona, California, Matt still primarily works as a mechanical engineer, but his entrepreneurial endeavors have expanded over the past few years. They’ve put an ever-increasing emphasis on growing the media company which is currently Sarah’s full-time job. When those endeavors regularly take them offroad, it can be hard to separate work and play but Matt and Sarah do value getting out and not working. They force themselves to leave their filming equipment behind and just enjoy being out in nature together, whether in the mountains or on the beach.

Matt and Sarah Girgis

Early adventures: Matt grew up going to the Oceano Dunes in Pismo Beach, getting off-pavement in whatever way he could. His uncle built custom Broncos, prerunners, and ATVs, and his family always had trailers and RVs so he was accustomed to being around some sort of outdoor adventure. But now the notion of taking your whole house with you, sitting in a parking lot all weekend, is not the outdoor lifestyle he and Sarah are after. Both of their backgrounds involve high-speed desert driving so kicking up some sand is the sign of a good day.

Notes from the writer: What was once a budding photography/videography side gig for Matt has turned into much more with the formation of RAD CO Media. While it is a cool name, Matt is intentionally designing their brand to capture the essence of what it means to Roam, Adventure, Discover (RAD). Initially Matt worked on projects like weddings, and offroading was just for fun. Now they’re able to combine the two by shooting a lot for offroad related events, tours, magazines, and company catalogs. Consequently, their offroad trips typically double as work trips. In addition to project related content, they’re always trying to shoot content for the vehicle and their brand as well.  While the media company is growing, they’ve recently added another new venture. Matt and Sarah are editors and co-founders of Offroad Travel TV. The project is starting out with a YouTube channel covering just about anything offroad or outdoors, with the goal of eventually hitting the television network. They also have plans to produce a podcast focused on a couple’s perspective on offroading and overlanding. The goal with these projects is to evolve into a full-time endeavor for both Matt and Sarah. With the work they’re doing and how quickly they are moving towards full-time media production, that will likely happen sooner rather than later.

Inspiration for buying the Bronco: When we first shared Matt’s story in 2020, it featured his 2017 Chevrolet Colorado. They still have that truck, so why move to the Bronco? When on location for project shoots, they had limited usable space with the truck. If they needed an extra shooter or an extra seat for some reason, they were out of luck. As a young couple they also began to think about future needs if they were to expand their family. In addition to configuration challenges, they also began to realize they needed more capability and extra power. As the couple discussed their options during a trip to Utah, they finally decided to look for a Bronco. After doing a lot of research, they found in the Bronco something that would let them keep it as warrantied as possible while still giving them what they needed performance-wise. The tipping point was that it could be so easily outfitted for camping/overlanding. They recently finished the build in time for a shakedown trip, but they’re already planning a phase two build. Since the Bronco primarily serves as their overland vehicle, the Chevy has been relegated to a desert racer.

Recent adventures: The couple recently took a 1500-mile excursion up the stunning and historic Highway 395, traversing the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range to Reno, Nevada before heading back home. The trip included 500-600 miles of offroading, including a stop in the Mono Lake area.

Upcoming trips: Matt and Sarah are looking forward to taking the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) from Big Sur up into Oregon. They’re also hoping to get to Colorado for some offroad fun before winter weather closes the passes.

Dream trip: Their ultimate goal is to go as far north as they can. Getting to see glaciers and the vibrancy of raw nature out in the backcountry would be a dream come true.

Fun fact: While the truck build developed from Matt’s vision, the Bronco is actually Sarah’s build. She’s comfortably taken the lead on what’s gone into making it exactly what they want in an overlanding vehicle.

Offroad community involvement: Much of the growth of their brand can be attributed to hard work but they’ve also benefited from the connections they’ve made in the offroad and overlanding industry. They have partnerships with several media brands and aftermarket companies. These have largely come about because of the various brands reaching out to them, not the other way around. For instance, the Bronco will be featured at the upcoming SEMA show and is the result of yet another out of the blue partnership.
