On this “episode” of 67 Designs Customer Spotlights, where we share the stories of some of our customers, we get to know Josh Carter. Carter, from Clayton, NC, is a software engineer at Red Hat. When he is not working, you can find him hanging in his rooftop tent on an adventure far from home!

Inspiration for buying his Jeep: Josh has had Jeeps on and off since he was 18 years old. When he got his first taste of offgrid camping in Portsmouth Island, NC, his two door JK 2010 quickly became a four door. He has been wheeling like crazy ever since!
First adventure: April 2016. He took the Jeep on the ferry over to Portsmouth and him and his family had the entire mile of beach to themselves. They park the trailer at an old lifesaving station and get out fishing, playing beach games and doing nighttime photography.
COVID adventures: April 2020. They hit the Georgia Traverse and went out to Cape Lookout for 4 days. After a month cooped up in the house, this was a good way to get away from everyone and recharge. It is easy to drive out to the beach for the day, where Josh’s toddler loves to get out in the waves.
Most memorable adventure: May 2019. Overland Expo West. Josh spent 2 weeks driving across country and back, taking time to see the Midwest. He noted all the Native American reservations he witnessed along the way, giving him a different perspective on things. Josh was able to see the plywood rooms built off campers, try fry bread and have some educational conversations. He also explored Gila National Forest for 4 days.
Upcoming trips: Josh is about to head to Florida’s Ocala National Forest and camp out on the beach and experience Fort De Soto Park. He is also trying to plan another 2 week trip out west.
Dream trip: To do a Southwest national park loop and hit about 11-12 parks. He is very big in going to national parks.
Advice for those who are just beginning overlanding: “Start simple, get out and explore then purchase the gear as you feel the need to.” Also, “cry once, buy once.”
#1 place he has camped: Mogollon Rim, AZ.
Fun fact about Josh: He considers himself a professional YouTuber, not because of content creation but because of how much he watches!
Jeep club memberships: Overland Bound and Carolina Overlanders.
Notes from the writer: Josh’s passion for overlanding is apparent and tied into his passion for family, as he does almost all his trips with his wife and son. When it is cold, though, he goes snow camping with some friends. Don’t worry—Dixie, his couch hound, always comes along. Being 3 hours away from OBX and 2 from Boone allows for countless adventures!
