Installation of the JL / Gladiator Mount Base - "The Rail" Edition

JL Mount - The Rail

Read the full instructions before starting. Follow these steps to install your JL Mount™ Rail Edition multi ball base. Allow 10-15 minutes.

Step 1 - Remove the TPE/Rubber Insert

Installation Installation

Remove the interior OEM rubber tray from the dash recess. Set aside.

Step 2 - Remove Left and Right Hand Side OEM Fasteners

Installation

Installation

Using a small Philips head screwdriver, remove the OEM fastener on the driver side of the dash recess. Set aside.

Complete the same OEM fastener removal on the Rights Hand Side (RHS)

Step 3 - Dry-fit the base and check alignment

Do NOT remove the 3M branded liner paper from the Very High Bond (VHB) material just yet. Instead, dry fit the JL Rail Edition base sections on both sides of the dash recess. Keep the metal rail level as you do this.

Dry Fit the Rail First

It will be obvious how you lead the base sections into the far edge (closest to the windshield glass) and then tilt down. The fit should be snug and the fastener hole will line up as you push down on the base sections.

Feel free to line up the fastener, but do not screw in just yet.

Step 4 - Mark the Dash for the Recommended Fastener Holes

The base for the Rail Edition has 2 holes holes and is delivered with two (2) fasteners. It is strongly recommended you install the supplied fasteners.

Mark the dash for drilling.

Use a Sharpie to mark the hole locations. You may wish to use tape to allow you to see the locations more clearly, but is not essential.

Step 5 - Remove the Rail Base

While keeping the metal rail level, gently raise the rail and remove the base. It will be snug and so we suggest rotation slightly as you left.

Set the base to one side while you tackle the next step.

Step 6 - Drill the 2 Holes

Using extreme caution, carefully drill two small starter holes (2.5mm diameter) through the dash at the four spots you marked in Step 4.

We suggest that you use a small drill chuck and work it by hand through the relatively soft dash material.

Drill the 4 holes

DO NOT penetrate more than the thickness of the dash material of (approximately 2mm) or you could damage components below the dash. Using a drill collar is strongly recommended.

Take care to avoid any contact with the windshield glass. Also consider undertaking step 6 with the front windshield folded forward to give you maximum room. See Jeep instructions for doing that on the JL.

Step 7 - Remove the 3M VHB Liner Paper

Remove the base from it's dry-fit position in Step 3 by gently pulling up the metal rail. Turn over the base and carefully remove the liner paper with the 3M print to expose the black VHB material.

Remove the VHB liner

Step 8 - Install the Base & Tighten OEM Fasteners

Replicating what you did in Step 3, install the base and line up the OEM fastener hole using the fastener. Push down firmly, but gently on the base end sections to ensure the VHB makes a solid contact with the dash surface. Re-check the alignment of the fastener. Using the Philips head screwdriver, carefully screw through the hole in the base to the under dash thread. This fit will be snug, so go gently to draw the base down as you turn the fastener and apply pressure to the end closest to the windshield.

Replace the OEM fasteners

Step 9 - Install Supplied Fasteners

Using the Philips head screwdriver, carefully screw the four (4) fasteners through the holes in the base sections into the holes you drilled in Step 6. This will draw the base down and ensure a tight bond of the VHB to the dash.

Install the supplied fasteners

Step 10 - Let the 3M VHB Reach Optimal Bond

Be patient!!! The optimal bond of the VHB with the dash material is ~24 hours. Do not overload the base or the VHB may needlessly pull away from the dash surface and result in a less than solid base installation. If you cannot contain yourself and want to connect the carbon fiber arm and holder, ensure that the arm contacts the top of the dash for full support!

Step 11 - Attach the 20mm diameter t-track ball

Install the ball at either end of the track.

If the 20mm t-track ball, fastener and nut is not already installed, or you are adding more, simply slide the ball and the flat nut in at either end. Use the the included 5mm Allen wrench or L-key.

Step 12 - Attach the Carbon Fiber Arm and Holder

Install the arm and holder.

Attach the carbon fiber arm and device holder that came with your order begin to use the JL Mount Rail edition. Remember to ALWAYS support the carbon fiber arms on the dash top. That provides the very best support to minimize movement and keeps the devices as low as possible.

Example setup

This is an example setup of the JLR-04 Pack (devices not included)

CAUTION - Nano, Mini & Small Arm Lengths Only

Packs JLR-02 through JLR-05 come with the small carbon fiber arm. The is the best size to get a holder just in front of the dash for a device holder.

Do NOT use the Rail base with the Medium or Large carbon fiber arms.

Total combined weight of all device/case combinations not to exceed 1.9 lbs with maximum arm length being the SMALL or a combination of MINI+Elbow+NANO components.

NEVER place any arm and holder in such a way that a device is held that could in any way obstruct the SRS airbag systems!
